Maintaining Your Oral Health Routine

Keeping your smile healthy and problem-free is particularly important right now.

With everything going on in the world, the last thing our North Muskegon, MI, general dentists Dr. Monica Lakatos and Dr. Michelle Matheson want is for you or someone you love to end up dealing with a toothache, broken orthodontics or other problems. To keep our mouths as healthy as possible requires simple but daily care. Here are some ways to amp up your oral health routine right now,

Good Oral Care Starts at Home

  • Brush teeth twice a day and floss daily. Make sure that you are using proper brushing and flossing techniques, as technique is the most important way to ensure a clean smile.
  • It's important for orthodontic patients to keep teeth clean and healthy while wearing braces. You may find that threader floss or an electric flosser help you safely get around brackets and wires to provide a better clean between teeth.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or once the bristles start to look worn and frayed. If you’ve been sick, you should also replace your toothbrush head immediately.
  • Make sure you are brushing at least two minutes every time you brush. If you don’t have an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer, it’s highly recommended that you use your phone or a kitchen timer to time how long you brush (you may be surprised to learn that you haven’t been brushing long enough).
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue to remove that bad breath-causing bacteria.
  • Use mouthwash after brushing and flossing to rinse away any germs or plaque that might still remain.

What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Eat for a Healthy Smile

  • Avoid sugar, starches and junk foods, which can increase your risk for cavities.
  • Eat a diet that is rich in fibrous veggies, colorful fruits, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy. A balanced, healthy diet will ensure that your teeth, gums and bones get the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
  • Limit snacking, which can increase the amount of plaque buildup on teeth and gums.
  • Make sure you are drinking enough water every day and staying hydrated.
